Fourth Arts Block: Exploring Experimental Culture in the East Village
Fourth Arts Block (FABnyc) is rooted in the Lower East Side’s long history of hosting community and cultural spaces that served marginalized immigrants, artists, and activists. In the 1960′s and 70′s, East 4th Street coalesced as a center for experimental theater and film. Four decades later, the block’s cultural groups founded FABnyc to preserve and develop these historic arts spaces. Join Tamara Greenfield, FABnyc’s Executive Director, for a tour through East 4th Street’s theaters and local public art sites to learn how FABnyc weaves the arts into the neighborhood to strengthen a distinctive East Village cultural and community identity. Stay for FringeNYC on 4th, an outdoor festival celebrating independent theater. FABnyc contributes to the naturally-occurring cultural district working group (NOCD-NY), an initiative seeking to strengthen organic, asset-based development in neighborhoods.
