Park Hill Community Market is an open-air marketplace of primarily West African immigrant women selling food, clothes, and cultural goods from a repurposed parking lot at Park Hill Apartments, a Section 8 housing development on Staten Island’s North Shore. The market provides a model for similar initiatives in public housing across New York City.

Incorporating a Cultural Blueprint for Healthy Communities in Gowanus and Bushwick

In the summer of 2016, the Making Gowanus initiative was launched to gather community leaders, artists, non-profit organizations, political representatives and public housing residents to define neighborhood goals in a community facing a number of planning and rezoning processes. In parallel, local artist Imani Gayle Gillison led a Cultural Blueprint for Healthy Communities piloting process with local residents, collecting feedback that culminated into a “We are Your Neighbors!” summary report.
