As part of NOCD-NY’s Cultivating Neighborhood Networks project, THE POINT CDC’s participatory action research (PAR) process illustrates how the Hunts Point’s Fish Parade, rooted in cultural preservation and celebration, fosters collaboration and cross-pollination. Elements of the project include:

A case study in collaboration with Urban Omnibus and Hatuey Ramos-Fermin, THE POINT Creative Director of Arts and Education, on how local environmental advocacy, art, and culture intersect at the parade & festival as a “brave vehicle for change.”

Artist in Residence: Danny P Peralta

As artist in residence for the project, Danny P Peralta uses audio interviews, photography, and art workshops to create life-sized photo murals and banners honoring community members' participation in the Fish Parade over the years.

Audio Stories

Community members tell stories of the parade from their perspectives.

Photography

Large format portraits are pasted around the neighborhood and on signs carried during the parade. QR codes link neighbors to audio clips of Fish Parade stories. Portraits are exhibited at THE POINT through the fall of 2024 and online.


History and Archives

Reflecting on the history of the neighborhood and archives of the Fish Parade holds deep significance for the Hunts Point community, reinforcing its continued legacy of local artistic talent, art and environmental justice activism, and collaboration.
