NOCD-NY Citywide Forum 2015

Thanks for joining us at THE POINT CDC in the Bronx on Friday, October 28 for our citywide forum, From the Neighborhood Up: Arts and Culture for a Just & Equitable City.

Artists, activists, educators and other community leaders came together to develop a vision for our city that cares about neighborhoods, insists on equity, and embraces civic energy. Participants explored ideas, got connected, and proposed bold new ideas. The day's program included:

Morning Sessions included tours, visits and conversations in the Bronx:

  • A Tour of Mott Haven Blossoming Galleries, Street Murals and Development Concerns with Linda Cunningham

  • THE POINT Village of Murals and Environmental Justice Tour with Misra Walker

  • Making Art in The South Bronx with Sharon De La Cruz

  • Kelly Street Shines! A New Artist Residency Space and Community Garden Thrives on Kelly Street

  • Morrisania’s Musical Legacy Tour with Elena Martinez

  • Young Lords Invisible Monuments Bike Ride with Hatuey Ramos-Fermín

  • ArtBuilt Mobile Studio Prototype Visit

  • Museum of Impact (MOI): Activist Love Letters

After lunch, a full convening included a panel with dialogue, performances and art Installations, and small group break-out sessions. Break outs included:

  • A Beginners Guide to Climate Justice with Alicia Grullón

  • Artist-Driven Markets with ARTs East New York and Napela/Park Hill Community Market of Staten Island

  • Immigrant Movement International/Caracol Interpreters Cooperative language justice workshop

  • My Baryo, My Borough: Community-Centered Oral History Workshop with Claro de los Reyes and The Laundromat Project

  • Patrick Rowe representing multi-generational printmaking collective Mobile Print Power

  • Poetry is not a Luxury with Voices UnBroken

  • Pregones Theater

  • Raul Ayala, People’s Climate Arts and Laundry Workers Center

  • Reclaiming Our City: Unleashing our Vision for Housing Justice through Arts and Culture with United States Department of Art and Culture (USDAC);

  • Undesigning the Redline with April de Simon

To close out the day, THE POINT invited us to for a post-party at their Campus for the Arts and Environment, next to Hunts Point Riverside Park, which doubled as the organizations’s 21st Birthday Celebration!
